Unlike all of the other interns, this past week I arrived in Washington, DC to begin this amazing summer. I arrived late due to a confluence of events: I was leading a cultural exchange/learning trip to Mumbai, India with Tufts University — where I go to school — until May 29th.

Back home now after my crazy, wonderful summer. I came home and jumped right back into things, moved back to school, got my apartment settled, caught up on my missed rock climbing and mountain biking this summer, and have started back in on my research projects at home.

I tend to be a bit of an adrenaline junkie; rock climbing, mountain biking, sky diving, skiing, snowboard, scuba diving, long boarding, etc. I love it all. My first day at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was an adrenaline rush of a different nature.

My first week as an SPS Intern has been a whirlwind of new and exciting things as well as a blast of jet lag, culture shock, and some mild climate changes. DC has been a great experience all around; from the awesome food to the Memorial Day Parade I have had great experiences exploring the city.

As I return to the school year routine, I think back to the wonderful memories I had this summer. I couldn’t imagine doing anything better with my time. The SPS internship program was truly amazing and opened my eyes to the possibilities a person has graduating with a physics major.

Friday officially marked the end of my first workweek at NIST, and all I can say is I have never worked in a work environment like it. From the employees, to the SURF interns and the giant campus, I was a little overwhelmed at first.

After my first week, the only thing I can complain about was my flight. I was expecting it to be short and easy, but it quickly turned into a 5-hour ordeal at the airport.

Wow! What an amazing summer. I'm back home in Buffalo now and I still can't believe my time in D.C. has come to an end. The journey home and the past week or so have been a mix of melancholy and joy.

There is no end to the exploration in D.C.! This past weekend we spent time walking through both the Freer Gallery of Art and Arlington National Cemetery. I was amazed by how many floors fit beneath the Freer Gallery!

Just a week ago I was packing my room up at Vassar and now I can barely believe that I'm here in D.C.! This week's been an amazing adventure. But first let me introduce myself.
