SPS Council Meetings

The SPS National Council meets face-to-face annually, usually in the fall in the Washington, DC, area and by video conference each spring. During years in which the Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Congress is held, as in 2019, the fall council meeting is held concurrently with the congress. ZCs and AZCs are also tasked with facilitating connections among the chapters in their zones, and between the chapters in their zone and SPS National. Many important initiatives stem from the ideas, discussions, and decisions that happen as a result of the work of council members and their guests.

The work of the National Council is to evaluate, plan, and drive forward initiatives of SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma. The bulk of this work is accomplished through committees composed of ZCs, AZCs, SPS staff, and invited guests.  It is primarily through the work of the committees that suggestions for SPS policy statements, changes to SPS programs, and changes to the societies’ priorities are brought forward. Committee work takes place at the fall National Council meeting, as well as throughout the year via teleconference or videoconference.

The next SPS Council meeting will be held September 14-17, 2023 in Washington, DC.
