I cannot believe that we are less than 3 weeks from finishing our internship. I feel like it was just yesterday that I was trying to understand how public transportation work and here I am seven weeks later sad to see everything coming to a close. Well… not actually a close because we still have 19 days left, but this is like the last lap of a timed mile, it is all just flying by. Like I say every week, work seemed to fly by. This week at work things were a little different because on Friday I had “bring your fellow interns to work” day. By this I mean it was time for the NIST interns to give a tour of our location. It was pretty fun to have all of my friends with me. I call it “a day in the life of Vanessa”, but not really because I didn’t do anything that I usually do. Nonetheless, it was a great time. I got to see so many places in NIST that I have never seen. My favorite was the electronic kilogram. Another highlight of my tour day was the morning outreach that we did with middle school teachers. My demo was the Rutherford gold foil experiment. I loved getting to explain this demo to the different teachers and hearing their feedback on how helpful it could be to their students. It was really a great feeling to know that I could potentially be contributing to future scientists.
My weekend was pretty normal. On Saturday morning I got up and went to go play soccer down the street. On my way there I finally leveled up on Pokemon Go. Please don’t think that I am one of those people that have become obsessed with the game. I think it is fun, but I seldom have extra time to go look for new Pokemon. After soccer I came back home, cooked breakfast, and watched a few episodes of cupcake wars. Later that evening I got to go eat with some of the postdocs from NIST and got dessert for dinner. On Sunday I went for a run, finally got a much-needed pedicure, and took a practice Chemistry GRE. Needless to say, I then spent the remainder of the evening studying for my upcoming GREs. As the summer is winding down it is time to finish up my research and get my presentation done. This week will be a busy one, but I’m excited to see how it goes!
On a completely unrelated note, my title says Spurs and Science because in San Antonio on Thursday it was Tim Duncan day. For people that aren’t basketball fans he was a player for the San Antonio Spurs (my hometown) and he just retired a few weeks ago. I forgot to wear my Spurs shirt on Thursday to celebrate, but don’t worry I wore it on Friday. Although I’m miles away from home I was excited to celebrate one of my favorite basketball players.
