I started last week off by sending out my very first FYI! It’s co-authored with Mitch and you can find it here: https://www.aip.org/fyi/2016/house-tees-basic-energy-research-legislation.  Monday was also the day I downloaded Pokemon Go.  ‘Twas a good day.

Since it was the last week congress was in session I attended three hearings: an astrophysics house hearing, an energy grid security senate hearing, and a space senate hearing.  Ted Cruz was the chairman of the space hearing and I sniped a blurry photo. Included below.

I also attended a PCAST (President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology) meeting in the National Academies building.  Topics discussed included forensic science, biodefense, and hearing aids.  Not exactly pertinent to FYI, but interesting to hear about regardless.

Friday we had a meeting with Tom about the image gallery for FYI and the eventual teaser images that will go with the articles.  This image compilation is a task I have been working on for some time now and I’m excited to help eventually make image finding easier for everyone.

Outside of work, this week I had dinner with two friends from school.  I finally tried The Diner in Adams Morgan which I’ve been wanted to do for some time, and had breakfast for dinner which is pretty much the best.  On Thursday, the interns and I attended a barbeque with AIP staff in the College Park Aviation Museum where we got to eat burgers while staring at early models of airplanes.  Much physics!  It also happened to be the site of a Pokemon gym.

This weekend all of the interns helped out at an outreach event with Dr. Mather.  We simulated planets orbiting a star with some marbles and spandex.  Afterwards Tabitha and I found a delicious lunch spot with some great happy hour prices right by the Woodley station metro stop.  The falafel was excellent. Definitely will be heading back there soon!
