It’s that time of the week again!

As I left off with in my last post, the interns had dinner with the Executive Committee of SPS.  We all met at Clyde’s in Gallery Place.  First off, the food was amazing.  I just had to get that out of the way so I can focus on the important parts of the evening.  The best part of the dinner was that we were able to mingle with members of the Executive Committee.  I was most surprised about the range of the conversations we had.  We went from professional conversations what responsibilities come with their titles to discussing our favorite ice cream flavors.

After dinner some of the interns accompanied members of the Executive Committee on a nighttime tour of the National Mall.  I had such an amazing time.  It was my first time I’ve seen the monuments at the National Mall (I know, it shouldn’t have taken me this long), and they were gorgeous all lit up.  Not to mention that it was amazing exercise.

On Saturday some of us went to the Pride Parade.  That was also an awesome experience.  This was my first pride event.  It was amazing to see so many people come together to celebrate being themselves.  My favorite tagline from the event was “pride, not prejudice,” probably because I have a love of all things Jane Austen.

I took Sunday easy to get ready for our outreach event at Tuckahoe Elementary.  The outreach went really well!  The kids really enjoyed the demos, and everyone had a lot of fun.  This outreach ended up being a great opportunity to test four or five demos that we want to put in the SOCK this year.  Hannah and Brean were able to test out some tuning fork demos.  Pat and Kyle helped to test our Boomwhackers© demo and a modified version of the straw pan pipe demo that was more geared for a younger audience.  Connor, Aman, and I got to present a demo with cup and string telephones.  I was especially surprised by how amazed the children that their friends could hear them through the “telephone,” even when they were whispered.  I guess that times are changing, because the cartoons I grew up with always referenced the cup and string telephone!

The rest of the week was uneventful, aside from my first trip to Ikea (wow, this is a summer of firsts).  Hannah and I have been doing a lot of writing and editing for the manual that goes with the SOCK.  The SOCK is progressing quite nicely, if I do say so myself.

Well, that’s all for now. Tune in next week for the next episode of SPS Interns!
