Getting There

Join us in celebrating the 2000 Quadrennial Congress of Sigma Pi Sigma at the Sigma Pi Sigma headquarters at the American Center for Physics in College Park, Maryland. Our goal is to spark the interchange of insight, experience, wisdom, and connections among our membership. In this, there are both personal and societal gains.

Sigma Pi Sigma is truly a physics alumni association. We are the only national physics organization that cuts across all career paths to unite a large subset of individuals who share a common heritage in physics even though we are found in all conceivable professions. This convention will recognize the varied paths taken by physics alumni and will emphasize the relationship between a solid physics education and success in a variety of professions.

We will kick off the Congress with a lecture by Sigma Pi Sigma member and Nobel Prize winner, William D. Phillips. There will be guest speakers (also Sigma Pi Sigma members) from industry, business, government, the humanities, and academia.

The "meat" of the convention will be breakout sessions in which moderators will integrate submitted "experience abstracts" and open discussion. Each break-out group will plan and deliver a presentation on their topic and discussion results at the day's conclusion.

The National Task Force on Undergraduate Physics (NTFUP) has asked Sigma Pi Sigma for recommendations on revitalizing undergraduate physics education. The Congress will generate a report of our collective recommendations for this purpose and for dissemination through the venues noted on this web-page. The banquet speaker will be science photographer Felice Frankel, whose book, On the Surface of Things, has received scientific and artistic acclaim.
