Getting There

Sigma Pi Sigma members make up a diverse community—from the humanities to the sciences, from government to industry. Bring your own experiences to the 2000 Congress and be heard. Recommendations made by the participants of this Congress will be disseminated to the physics community through the following channels:

  • The APS-AAPT-AIP National Task Force on Revitalizing Undergraduate Physics *
  • The AAPT Committee on Undergraduate Physics Education
  • The Physics Department Reveille (AIP bi-annual newsletter to all physics department chairs)
  • The APS Committee on Education
  • Publication in Radiations

* May 18, 2000

Dear Sigma Pi Sigma Members,

I am writing to encourage you to participate in the Quadrennial Sigma Pi Sigma Congress to be held in September, 2000. As part of that Congress you will have the opportunity to provide important recommendations to the physics community about physics and physics education. The National Task Force on Undergraduate Physics, which is supported by the American Association of Physics Teacher, the American Physical Society, The American Institute of Physics, and the ExxonMobil Foundation, is dedicated to working with the physics community and the physics professional organizations to improve undergraduate physics. The recommendations made at the Sigma Pi Sigma Congress will be very helpful to the Task Force as we plan our activities in the next few years. Those recommendations are likely to have a major impact on the future of physics in the United States. I strongly encourage you attend the Congress and to give us your most thoughtful recommendations.

Sincerely,

Robert C. Hilborn
